Veterinary Referrals
My Approach
I use detailed history taking and functional assessment to consider the dog’s health, learning history, environment and the context in which behaviour occurs. Where physical health may be influencing behaviour, I will liaise with or refer the client back to their veterinary team. Diagnosis, investigation and medication remain within the veterinary surgeon’s remit.
What to Expect
Behaviour assessments include review of behavioural and relevant health history, an approximately two-hour consultation, functional assessment and an individual behaviour modification and management plan.
My reports are designed to provide information that may also be useful to the veterinary team, including relevant owner-reported health history and objective observations of posture, gait, movement, handling and behaviour within the dog’s usual environment.
With client consent, reports can be shared with the veterinary practice, including relevant observations, behavioural hypotheses and any areas where further veterinary input may be appropriate. I am happy to liaise directly with the veterinary team throughout a case.
Referring a Client
Veterinary professionals are very welcome to contact me directly to discuss or make a referral.
Pet Insurance
Some pet insurance policies may cover behavioural consultation fees following veterinary referral. Clients should check the terms of their individual policy before booking.
Behaviour and physical health are closely interconnected, and effective behaviour support often requires collaboration between behaviour professionals and the veterinary team. I welcome referrals and collaborative working with veterinary practices across North Devon.
I hold a First Class BSc (Hons) in Canine Behaviour Management, am a KPA Certified Training Partner and an ABTC-registered Animal Training Instructor. I am currently developing my clinical case portfolio as I work towards CCAB accreditation. https://www.ccab.uk/referring-vets/
